Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park USA

Giant Sequoia Tree, Sequoia National Park

Located in the Sierra Nevada California USA, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks occupy over 860,000 acres. They offer fantastic Sierra scenery without the crowds of Yosemite, with mountains reaching of over 13,000 feet. The driving distance to the National Parks is about 5 hours from San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Sequoia Driving Directions

Access to the park from the north is via Highway 99 to Fresno, CA and then Kings Canyon Highway 180 east. The driving distance from Fresno to Sequoia National Park's entrance is 55 miles. From the south take Highway 99 to Visalia then Highway 198 east to the park entrance. A driving map can be found on http://www.visitsequoia.com.

Moro Rock Climb

Moro Rock Climb, Sequoia

Sequoia National Park's Moro Rock Climb (1/4 mile) starts from Crescent Meadow Road 1.5 miles from Grant Village. Moro Rock offers views of the Great Western Divide to the east and Sequoia's wilderness areas. Unsuitable for small children; path can be slippery.

Sunset at Moro Rock is memorable. To identify distant peaks, there's a map at the summit.

Hume Lake

Hume Lake, Sequoia National Park

Hume Lake has some of Sequoia National Park's best scenery. This beautiful mountain lake is home to a Christian camp.  Hume Lake is a great place for picnics and also offers swimming, hiking, walking and rock climbing. Good facilities are provided.

Panoramic Point

Panoramic Point, Grant Village

Panoramic Point at 7,520 feet is a short 2.3 mile drive from the recently constructed Grant Grove Village cabins and offers excellent high Sierra scenery.

The Sequoia lodging and facilities at Grant Grove Village are first class.

Little Baldy Trail

Little Baldy Trail, Sequoia

Little Baldy Trail (3.4 miles round trip) offers one of the best panoramic views of any Sequoia National Park day hike. The Little Baldy Trail starts from the General's Highway 6.6 miles north west of Lodgepole and take about an hour.

Sequoia Weather

Layered clothing is advised as the Sequoia weather and temperatures can vary considerably with altitude. The park has hot summers at lower elevations, where temperatures may exceed 80 degrees F. Nights can be cold at higher elevations any time of the year. Most precipitation in Sequoia National Park falls mainly between January until May. Snow is present on the Sierra Nevada peaks until mid May. The best times to visit are between mid May and the end of September.

Grant Grove cabins and tent cabins (summer only) are conveniently located and within walking distance of Grant Grove Giant Sequoias. Grant Grove restaurant provides American cuisine. There's also an ATM and gift shop at Grant Grove Village.

John Muir Lodge

Dedicated to John Muir, this newly constructed Sequoia lodge has 36 cabins with private bath and offers high standards of accommodation, convenient for both parks. Rates from $79 to $159 per night.

Stony Creek Lodge

Located 15 miles north of Sequoia National Park's Giant Forest, between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Cedar Grove Lodge

Located next to Kings River in the heart of Kings Canyon National Park is Cedar Grove Lodge. The Cedar Grove Snack Bar in the lodge provides light meals and is ideal for hiking the Kings Canyon backcountry.
